What’s in this Keto Lemon Lime Slushie for You?

1. Tons of Nutrients in a Low-Carb, Low-Calorie Summer Drink

Lemons and limes contain powerful nutrients, packed in a low-carb, low-calorie fruit. In fact, the juice from ½ lemon or lime contains 6 calories or less, and 2 grams carbohydrates or less (1). It’s a low-carb package, but the nutrient abound. They include small amounts of vitamin C, thiamin, folate, pantothenic acid, calcium, magnesium, and copper.

2. Immune System Support

Let’s start with Vitamin C. This water-soluble vitamin has been linked to immune health, and a reduction in inflammation and oxidative stress.

In fact, one review showed that adequate vitamin C could reduce the duration of common colds and respiratory infections (2).

How?

Vitamin C enhances the proliferation of B- and T- immune cells via gene regulation. When vitamin C is deficient, the cells display impaired immunity and higher susceptibility to infections. When infection occurs, vitamin C levels drop as it’s used to fight them, and then requires higher consumption rates to continue to be effective (9).

Both lemons and limes provide vitamin C.

3. Better Weight Loss and Blood Sugars

The benefits of limes and lemons extend to blood sugars. Limes have been found to reduce blood sugar levels after a meal, and improve overall HgbA1C according to this study of 70 patients with diabetes (3). Improved blood sugars, in turn, can promote fat loss as cells become more sensitive to insulin.

What’s more, since adding lemons and limes to water can help you drink more, you can take advantage of adequate hydration for weight loss!

4. Heart Health Support

The vitamin C in limes and lemons goes beyond the immune system; it can benefit the heart as well. In fact, one study showed that increases in fruit and vegetable intake, especially high-vitamin-C options, reduced heart disease by 4 percent (4). Other studies have shown reduced blood pressure with increased intake of lemons (5).

Vitamin C can also reduce chronic inflammation to fight the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and more. A study from Oregon State University found that vitamin C reduced inflammation (6) while another has shown limes reduce kidney cell stress and inflammation (7).

5. Lemons and Limes May Fight Cancer

Another benefit of lemon and lime antioxidants? They may fight cancer cells.

In lab studies, lemon extract has killed breast cancer cells. In other studies, lemon juice has stopped the growth of other types of cancer cells (8) (9).

It’s hypothesized that lemons’ compound hesperidin and d-limonene have anti-cancer properties. (10, 11).

Citrus fruits are good for the fight against cancer. For example, a 2015 study showed a possible link between increased citrus fruit consumption and a diminished risk of esophageal cancer (12). Another 2018 meta-analysis of this study and others stated, “This meta-analysis indicates that intakes of citrus fruit significantly reduce the risk of esophageal cancer (ESCC)… Further studies about constituents in citrus fruit and its mechanism are warranted (13).”

6. Glowing, Youthful Skin

Lemon and lime juice is a great anti-aging drink option, and can actually improve skin health. Again, it’s the antioxidants fighting the free radicals. One lime has 25-32% of your RDA for vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant.

Free radical build-up can contribute to aging skin, which results in wrinkles age spots, dryness, and loss of elasticity. Antioxidants, from the outside in, and inside out, may improve this condition (14).

In fact, studies have shown that those who suffer from severe acne often have a high level of oxidative stress in the body (15).

What’s more, vitamin C from foods like limes is important to the function of collagen, wound healing, and the strengthening of connective tissue (16).

7. More Benefits

There are even more benefits from limes and lemons. They

Fight kidney stones(17)

Have anti-nausea properties

Increase iron absorption

May reduce blood uric acid levels to help prevent gout

May protect memory and may reduce cognitive decline (18, 19).

Amazing Additions

We’ve added even more nutrition with the option of fermented greens and green tea with Fermented Green Supremefood, or berries with Red Supremefood (includes cranberries, blueberries, and raspberries). They also contain prebiotics and probiotics blends of L. rhamnosus, L. casei, B. longum, and L. acidophilus.

Or, add Instant Ketones to help you get in, or stay in, the Keto Zone while enjoying amazing energy and mental focus.

Even though water is your best bet when it comes to the healthiest keto drink, many struggle with using it as their only source of hydration.

If you’re used to drinking sugary sodas and lattes every day, water can seem especially boring. Thankfully, there are plenty of delicious keto-friendly options to choose from. Here’s what you can and cannot drink on the Keto Zone diet.

What You CAN Drink on Keto Zone

Coffee

Coffee (hot or iced), espresso, and americanos are great keto choices. Coffee has been proven to aid the ketosis process, as it boosts fat loss, appetite suppression, and metabolic rate. (1, 2, 3) To learn more benefits of coffee, check out 13 Jaw-Dropping Benefits of Coffee.

If you don’t like your coffee black, add a splash of unsweetened heavy cream and some keto sweetener like stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol. Not ready to give up your lattes yet? Make it with unsweetened nut milk without flavoring.

MCT Oil Powder is always our go-to coffee creamer and is perfect for an extra boost of healthy fats in the morning!

Tea

Tea has been around for centuries for good reason. Green and black tea support the body by offering antioxidants, anti-aging benefits, weight loss improvement, heart disease protection, and a lower risk of cancer, (4, 5, 6 ).

You can also try herbal teas like peppermint, ginger, and Calming Keto Zone Chamomile Tea.

Sparkling Water

Fizz things up! Sparkling drinks such as non-flavored San Pellegrino are a great way to change up your water intake. Popular sparkling beverage, La Croix, even comes in many different delicious flavors like Blackberry Cucumber and Coconut that are low-carb and sugar-free.

Bone Broth

Bone broth is made by boiling down bones from meat like chicken and beef. It can restore gut health, protect joints, offer a healthy dose of collagen, aid weight loss, fight osteoarthritis, and positively impact your immune system. (7, 8, 9, 10) Make some yourself by trying the Keto Zone Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Bone Broth recipe.

Shakes & Smoothies

Even though a lot of fruits aren’t keto-friendly, you can still enjoy a smoothie. (And even a shake!) Here’s what you need:

Healthy fat source: Coconut oil, MCT Oil Powder, avocado, or nut butter

Protein: Keto Zone Hydrolyzed Chicken + Marine Collagen with Probiotics

Fruits: Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are all keto-friendly. You can also add in some veggies like spinach or kale for extra nutrients.

Extras: Keto Zone Instant Ketones or Keto Zone Coffee

When it comes to whipping up a delicious keto shake, use the Keto Zone Cookies & Cream Shake for a high-fat, low-carb meal replacement and read The 5 Must-Have Ingredients in a Health Shake.

What You CAN’T Drink on Keto Zone

Sodas

As tempting as it is to grab that diet or zero soda and call it keto-friendly, they’re often loaded with artificial sweeteners that will do more harm than good.

And as you probably guessed, regular soda is out of the question too. One 12 ounce can of Coca-Cola has 33 grams of sugar and 35.2 grams of carbs– not keto-friendly! (11)

Juice

Those juices marked down as healthy are more than meets the eye. Usually, fruit and even sometimes vegetable juices have an excess amount of added sugar. This goes for orange juice, apple juice, pineapple juice, and other sugary drinks like lemonade.

Sports Drinks

Beverages like Gatorade, Powerade, and even Vitamin Water are full of unnecessary sugar and carbs. One bottle of Gatorade has almost 40 grams of carbohydrates and 32 grams of sugar! (12)

At the end of the day, it’s best to stay away and make your own electrolyte drink at home using a pinch of salt and a glass of water. Or, you can drink low-carb, unsweetened coconut water instead.

You can also take Instant Ketones since they’re filled with electrolytes and are a perfect source of hydration.

Sugary Coffee

Unfortunately, those pumpkin spice lattes, milky beverages, and Frappuccinos don’t make the cut. Their sugary, high-carb substances outweigh the benefits of the coffee, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your favorite coffee treat. Try making a Homemade Pumpkin Spice Mocha.

Bottom Line

Water isn’t your only option. You have plenty of yummy, keto-friendly drinks to choose from to avoid getting bored or discouraged in the Keto Zone. Try out one of the recipes above and head over to our Keto Zone shopping page to purchase all of the products you need!
